Wins first Pro Wrestling Grand Prix MVP award.
Defeats Shinya Hashimoto to become the 17th IWGP Heavyweight Champion on May 3 at Fukuoka Dome. He had won the belt with Great Muta in August 1992, but this was the first time he was crowned with his bare face.
On August 15, he defeated Shinya Hashimoto in the "G1 Climax" championship match at the Ryogoku tournament, winning his first G1 championship. In addition, after winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship for the first time, he declared on the microphone, "I'm going to keep on pushing forward.
On October 9, he successfully defended the IWGP Heavyweight Title for the fourth time by defeating Nobuhiko Takada with a figure-four leg lock at the Tokyo Dome, in a rivalry match against UWF International.
